Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (MSIIP)

Program Description

The National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP) provides paid opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Minority Serving Institutions. NNSA-MSIIP is open to all academic backgrounds.

NNSA-MSIIP offers summer and year-long internship opportunities with the NNSA, national laboratories, and site offices. Internship projects are focused on engineering, science, research, technology, policy, business, and government relations.

Program participants develop the experience needed to “jump-start” their careers and potential for future opportunities within the federal government. Interns are mentored by experienced staff, researchers, and scientists, to develop professional skills and enhance leadership capabilities.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizenship
  • 18 years old by appointment start date
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate or graduate studies as of Spring/Summer 2025.
    • First-semester freshman at an MSI must submit a high school transcript to verify cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the Spring/Summer 2025.
    • If you returned to school in Fall 2025 after a break, your most recent college or high school transcript showing a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale must be provided.
  • Must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate student in a degree-seeking program during Fall 2025 at an accredited Minority Serving Institutions. Proof of enrollment is required at the time of application. View the list of eligible MSIs
  • Must commit to the duration of the internship program:
    • Summer (12 weeks, full-time on-site participation)
    • Year-long (12-months, 12 weeks full-time on-site during summer, part-time/full-time virtual participation during the academic year depending on eligibility)

Internship Details

  • Program Dates: June 1 – August 21, 2026

  • Acceptance Date: May 2026
  • Stipend
    • Undergraduate Students and Post-Associate’s – $750 per week
    • Post-Bachelor’s- $850 per week
    • Master’s Students – $950 per week
    • Post-Master’s – $1,050 per week
    • Doctoral Students and Postdoctoral – $1,150 per week
  • Housing: A housing supplement may be provided for onsite or hybrid internships when relocation exceeds 50 miles from the Fermilab site.
  • Transportation: Inbound and outbound travel support is available for onsite or hybrid internships if residence is greater than 50 miles from the Fermilab site.
  • Travel: Travel the Fermilab installations for site visits, conferences, meetings, and other professional development activities may be approved during the internship period upon mentor request. Additional travel requests will be reviewed and considered by the NNSA-MSIIP Program Manager on a case-by-case basis.
