Business Intern Program (BIP)

The Fermilab Business Intern Program provides opportunities for business, accounting, economics, policy, and computer science students to contribute to Fermilab’s scientific mission by supporting general business operations for the laboratory as well as working on projects in business systems, accounting, and information technology.

Community College Internships (CCI)

CCI provides community college students with 10-week summer technical training experiences. Students work with scientists and engineers on instrumentation, technology, and computing projects related to Fermilab’s research programs.

DOE Omni Technology Alliance Internship

The DOE Omni Technology Alliance Internship Program provides paid 10-week summer internships for up to three consecutive summers for talented undergraduate and graduate students in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and other related fields. Interns will hold appointments at DOE national laboratories, Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs), plants, DOE Headquarters, and other approved sites.

Open Quantum Initiative Undergraduate Fellowship (OQI)

The OQI Fellowship Program seeks to advance career and research opportunities for young scientists from groups historically minoritized in the field of quantum science. The program is targeted for outstanding undergraduate students to gain research experiences early in their quantum careers and build their professional networks.

Quantum Computing Internship for Physics Undergraduates Program (QCIPU)

Undergraduate’s students majoring in physics and who are interested in quantum computing for the simulation of physics are invited to apply. In this three-week online-only program, participants will gain hands-on experience programming for existing quantum computers using Python and Qiskit. This will be supplemented by daily lectures on the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and quantum computing. The program will culminate in participants running their own code on an IBM quantum computer.

Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST)

Undergraduate sophomores and juniors majoring in physics, engineering (mechanical, electrical and computer), materials science, mathematics and computer science conduct research with Fermilab scientists and engineers. Eligible students must be enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the United States. SIST aims to increase the representation of underrepresented groups (Black, Hispanic/Latino, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Alaska Native/American Indian) and women in scientific research and the engineering workforce.

Undergraduate Cooperative Education Program

Undergraduate Cooperative Education students work alongside world-class scientists and engineers. The program supports a theory-practice model of learning, in which students apply what they learn at their home institutions to cutting-edge experiments and projects vital to Fermilab’s scientific mission.

URA-Fermilab: Undergraduate Women in STEM

Interns will spend 10 weeks at Fermilab working under the direct leadership, guidance, and supervision of Fermilab scientists, engineers, computing professionals, technicians, and staff across all laboratory directorates performing hands-on research. In addition, the cohort will meet with mentors and advisors to grow their professional networks, take part in engaging and inclusive intellectual discussions, directly benefit from the laboratory resources and participate in professional development and social engagement activities.

US CMS Undergraduate Internship

The US CMS Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program seeks to address the under-representation of women and minoritized students in STEM fields, in particular Physics. It is a 10-week paid internship program, which offers female and minority undergraduate students an opportunity to perform a project under the mentorship of scientists working at the frontier of Physics at one of the 50+ institutions in the US.

VetTech

Fermilab VetTech is a military veteran intern who provides routine technical support for an assigned experiment or support group. The program assumes apprenticeship level expertise, general military experience and/or knowledge-based on academic study. These are paid 10-week internships, 40-hour workweek, are available annually in the summer. We offer VetTech Computing, VetTech Mechanical, VetTech Electrical and VetTech Procurement internships.

Visiting Faculty Program (VFP)

VFP provides 10-week summer hands-on research experiences at Fermilab for faculty and student teams from community colleges and four-year institutions historically underrepresented in the research community. Faculty applicants must submit a research project proposal co-developed with Fermilab staff.
